An Open Discussion With Martha Burk
We are very fortunate to have Dr. Martha Burk, a well-known political psychologist, come to speak.
Martha Burk is a political psychologist and women's issues expert who co-founded the Center for Advancement of Public Policy in Washington, D.C. She is the Money Editor for Ms. magazine, a frequent front-page blogger for Huffington Post, and syndicated to news outlets nationwide through Other Words. She also hosts the public radio show Equal Time With Martha Burk, marketed through Public Radio International. She is a regular political analyst for KNME public television and appears on network television periodically as a commentator on political issues as they affect women. Dr. Burk's latest book is Your Voice, Your Vote: The Savvy Woman's Guide to Power, Politics, and the Change We Need (3rd ed, 2016 -18) is a Ms. Magazine book selection. Her book will be available for purchase at the meeting.
From 2000-2005 Dr. Burk served as Chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO) the nation's oldest and largest coalition of women's groups, collectively representing over ten million women. She remains at the forefront of the debate on women's progress in the U.S. and around the world. Dr. Burk is currently Director of the Corporate Accountability Project for the National Council of Women's Organizations and a consultant on pay equity to several national, state, and local government entities.
In addition to extensive work on domestic policy, Dr. Burk has conducted training workshops with women's NGOs internationally in Macedonia and Kuwait, under the sponsorship of USAID, and has conducted training in the U.S. for delegations from Russia, Botswana, Korea, Romania, Bulgaria, Australia and the Middle East. She has been a member of official U.S. Delegations to international conferences in Iceland, Lithuania, Estonia, Cuba, and China.
Dr. Burk has been a contributor to major newspapers, websites, and print outlets on women's issues and public policy, including USA Today, The Nation, Foreign Policy, Working Woman, Business Woman, Executive Female, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Los Angeles Daily News, and PoliticsDaily.com, BillMoyers.com and many others. She has appeared on a great number of news shows, including The Today Show, ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, CNN Financial, Bloomberg News, Wolf Blitzer Reports, Brian Williams Show, Crossfire, Fox Morning News, News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Hardball, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Burk holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington, and resides in Corrales, New Mexico with her husband, Ralph Estes.
