In 1963 Malcolm Steiner (AKA Grandpa) set out to conquer another hobby – cooking & baking. At that time he was already a painter, an Orchidist (person who raises orchids), a volunteer at Long Island Jewish Hospital – delivering said orchids to patients rooms, and in his spare time, ran Steiner Plastics which became Universal Sign Company, founded by his mother, Cyrille Steiner.
Grandpa Malcolm quickly became a commander of the kitchen. If he wasn’t in his greenhouse he was walking around the kitchen in his apron with a dishtowel hanging out of his back pocket. He was tall, bald, skinny, and loved butter. If it didn’t taste right he was famous for saying, “just add butter.” He worked alongside my father at Universal Sign Corporation until his passing at 90 years of age. He was a man of very few words. Nonetheless my brother and I have a treasure trove of memories filled with his very best recipes. Fortunately, he took his daughter in-law Nanci (AKA mom) under his wing and taught her everything he knew.
Nanci Steiner (born in NYC, raised in Port Washington) was diagnosed a Celiac over 30 years ago. Over the past 3 decades she worked tirelessly to develop a gluten free all-purpose flour that baked for the masses. Many a cake met their demise in her kitchen. She has tested every product on the market. Her one goal was to bake something so good, so delicious, so perfectly moist the unsuspecting consumer would never know it was gluten free. In 2010 Jeffrey (AKA my brother) and I realized she was very close. We went ahead and developed the brand, Steiner’s Coffee Cake of New York. All the while Nanci would try to dampen our excitement, “you know I may not get this right…”
She did – in May of 2016 Nanci nailed it. On the precipice of her 70th year she launched her company.

We are first-generation Italian-Americans and native Long Islanders who came of age working at our father’s pizzeria. It was an unpretentious spot where you could get a slice and a soda on the run, typical of the neighborhood in those days. Working there was not glamorous, and in fact, it was a lot of hard work. But it was where we got our education on food.
Little did we know what an indelible impression those days behind the pizza counter would make. Years later, after working our way up the corporate ladder, we realized that food was our true passion.
In 1991, we opened the doors to our first namesake restaurant with the vision to create a local establishment serving family-style Italian fare with our own modern touch. When it was time to create our restaurant menu, it was important for us to honor our heritage while putting our own imprint on beloved Italian classics.This is how our chicken meatball was born.
Over 25 years later, our chicken meatball is now the signature item at our Long Island restaurants. Last year, we decided to package and sell our famous chicken meatball for people to enjoy at home. Now, only a year later, we are in nearly 125 retail locations across Long Island and the Tri-state area and have two different style meatballs - Butera’s Original Restaurant Style Chicken Meatball and Butera’s Gluten Free Chicken Meatball made with Cauliflower and Roasted Tomato.

The following months were spent researching, formulating, developing and then eventually launching JAVAMELTS. We are Corey and Sara Meyer, owners of Little Bird. We make all sorts of strange and wonderfully curious confections in Long Island, NY.
Like many great origin stories it all began with Chocolate Covered Orange Peels. Sara made them as a present for Corey. They came out great. So Sara started candying everything in the house. She decided to try jalapeños. Corey told her that she was nuts. Sara didn't listen, as usual. Good thing this time. They were awesome. Sara brought the candied jalapeños to work and her co-workers placed orders. Little Bird was hatched.
The final touch was the name Little Bird – it comes from Corey's grandmother Fay whose name means Little Bird.
Our line has since expanded to Fire Bites (dark, milk and white chocolate with candied jalapeño), Fire Syrup (candied jalapeño simple syrup), Hot and Sweet Nuts (candied peanuts with candied jalapeños) and Fire Walker Trail Mix (dark chocolate Fire Bites, roasted salted almonds and dried pineapple). We use non-GMO pure cane sugar and source local jalapeños whenever possible.
